Information for Parents
Everything you need to know if your child has been referred to or is interested in attending GASP.
About Our Courses
GASP welcomes students aged 13–16 who struggle within mainstream education, offering a tailored learning experience focussed around practical motor vehicle engineering. Courses run from 12 weeks up to a full academic year, delivered either at our purpose-built workshop in Albury or via one of our three mobile classrooms, which can come directly to your child’s school.
Groups have a maximum of six young people with two GASP tutors, ensuring learning is focussed and personalised. Our tutors act as mentors as well as teachers — supporting, advising and guiding your child, and working with expert organisations for mental health and behaviour management support where needed.
Our tutors are experienced in working with a broad range of abilities, challenges and strengths — including children with special educational needs, those who have struggled with school attendance, or who simply learn better through hands-on, practical activities.
For our daytime sessions students can only be referred from schools or other learning providers. We cannot accept a referral from a parent or carer.
Curriculum
Activity topics include health and safety, workshop tools, materials and equipment, electrical systems and diagnostics, light vehicle engine units and components, and gearing and braking systems. All topics include key elements of Maths and English, so your child continues developing core skills alongside practical mechanics.
Learning is accredited by AQA, and your child will receive Unit Awards for completed activities and topics — building a portfolio of certificates and photographs that demonstrates their achievements to their school, peers and potential employers. Many students also have the opportunity to engage with local employers and colleges, broadening their horizons for future training and employment.
Testimonials
My son has taken part in your project this year. I wanted to let you know what a huge impact it has had. Your support and belief in him has brought about a huge change in his self-esteem and confidence.
I just wanted to let you know how much my son enjoyed his first session this evening… He really did and talked about it all the way home. He's usually a teen of fairly limited conversation unless he's excited and enthused!
Evening Youth Club for Parents
In addition to daytime courses, GASP runs evening sessions every Monday and Wednesday, led by dedicated volunteers. Alongside motor mechanics, evening students design, build and race Greenpower F24 electric karts — competing at Goodwood, Dunsfold and Duncton, with GASP teams reaching the international finals every year.
